Original Document Apostille

When the receiving authority specifically requires apostille on your physical original document. We guide you through every step — from notarization to secure return shipping.

When You Need the Original Apostille

Our default service is the True Copy Apostille — faster, more affordable, and no mailing required. The Original Document Apostille is only needed when the receiving foreign authority specifically requires apostille on the physical original document rather than a certified true copy.

Not sure which you need? Submit your document for a free review and we'll confirm the correct protocol for your destination country and document type at no charge.

How Original Protocol Works

1

Confirm Requirement

We verify with you that the receiving authority actually requires the Original Protocol. Many clients are incorrectly told they need it when True Copy is accepted.

2

Notarization if Needed

Some documents require in-state physical notarization before apostille. We coordinate a Mobile Notary or guide you on obtaining notarization in the correct state.

3

Mail Your Original

You ship your original document to our office using a trackable carrier. We provide a pre-addressed shipping label and intake checklist.

4

We File and Process

We submit your original to the correct Secretary of State or federal authority and track progress through completion.

5

Returned with Apostille

Your original document with the attached apostille certificate is returned to you by tracked overnight or international shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents typically require Original Protocol?+
Some foreign embassies, civil registries, and notarial authorities require Original Protocol for Powers of Attorney, certain academic credentials, and court-issued documents. The requirement varies by destination country and receiving institution.
Is Remote Online Notary accepted for Original Protocol?+
No. For Original Protocol, any required notarization must be performed by a physical notary commissioned in the state where the document was issued. Remote Online Notary is a digital notarization and does not satisfy this requirement. A Mobile Notary is recommended instead.
What if I can't retrieve a new original?+
We offer Document Retrieval for corporate documents, vital records, and court documents. For vital records outside New York, we recommend ordering a certified copy through VitalChek and shipping it directly to us.
How long does Original Protocol take?+
Processing time begins after we receive your original document. State processing typically takes 3–10 business days depending on the state authority. Federal documents take 6–14 business days. Shipping time is additional on both ends.
